From the start, The Restoration of The Merrion demanded the highest standards and careful research which took Alice Roden, Interior Designer of the hotel, to the Victoria & Albert Museum in London to absorb its famous 18th century architecture and to the grand hotels of Paris. Her brief was both simple and clear - “To create a space with sensitivity to the 18th century heritage of the building, with light and airy bedrooms.”
Alice used Georgian colours throughout the guestrooms in a subtle palette ranging from light blue, turquoise, slate blue, sage green and cream. For the fabrics, she designed woven Irish linen check upholstery fabric. The colours in the linen are echoed in the curtains, made of toile de Jouey. The toile appears in a series of colourways, to tone with the walls; red/cream on the first floor and blue/cream on the second and third floors. The bedside lamps are based on 18th century Delftware and were specially commissioned by The Merrion.
Bathrooms throughout the hotel have been designed using striking Italian carrera marble and contemporary chrome fittings. The Bathrooms are remarkably spacious and airy, and all but five offer separate power showers and bath stalls.
Just one month after opening, The Merrion was awarded ‘Best Hotel Room in Dublin’ by the American business magazine FORTUNE. The rooms are the epitome of elegance, but also supremely inviting and comfortable.
All rooms in the Main House are equipped with full air conditioning, multiline telephones, fully stocked mini bars, cable/satellite television, complimentary WiFi, individual safes, Italian marble bathrooms with Asprey amenities, bathrobes and slippers.
As in The Main House, the guestrooms in the Garden Wing are all equipped with individually controlled air- conditioning, multiline telephones, personalised voice-mail with remote access, fully stocked mini bars, cable/satellite television, complimentary WiFi, individual safes, Italian marble bathrooms with Asprey amenities, bathrobes and slippers.
Alice Roden chose a blend of fabrics whose colours and textures complement each other. The bedspreads, a linen and cotton mix, were commissioned in a neo-classical acanthus design. The curtains, designed by Alice, were woven in fine wool in a subtle marled mixture of colours, they are lined with a small shirting check.

The Merrion stands directly opposite Government Buildings in the heart of Dublin city center. On the doorstep is Upper Merrion Street, where Government Buildings, The National Gallery and The National Museum of Ireland are located. A short walk leads to the adjacent "golden mile" of lively pubs, shops and restaurants dotted around St. Stephen's Green. Grafton Street is a leisurely stroll away for all the latest designer shops. The Merrion's location is also surrounded by commerce and industry - business people coming to and from work as the city center bustles with action. Weekends in contrast are peaceful. Horse-drawn carriages clip-clop past the Georgian railings of nearby Merrion Square, which are hung with the work of local exhibiting artists.
From Dublin airport, ( DUB ) which is 8 miles from The Merrion, take the M1 Motorway southbound towards the City Centre. Once on Dorset Street, continue on straight to Bolton Street. Turn left onto Capel Street and continue on straight to the river. Turn left onto Ormond Quay and then take the next turn right, traveling over O’Connell Bridge onto D’Olier Street. Trinity College will be directly ahead. Bear right at the traffic lights, keeping the College on your left. Bear Left, to travel along Nassau Street in the direction of Merrion Square. Turn right onto Merrion Square West. The Merrion is situated at the top of Upper Merrion Street on the left hand side, beyond Government Buildings, which are on the right hand side.
